CONCERNED parents are demanding answers after a nursery was forced to close amid safeguarding allegations.

National education watchdog Ofsted closed Bubbles @ St Paul's Nursery last Wednesday following concerns 'that a child may be exposed to a risk of harm'.

The Whitley Wood Lane Nursery, which is privately run by Greyfriars Ministries Limited (GML), has been suspended from providing childcare.

Ruth House told the Chronicle: "Our granddaughter loved going to Bubbles @ St Pauls, but was upset along with other children that turned up for nursery last Wednesday.

"There were no lights on and no toys out and not one person to be seen.

"Not even any notice whatsoever about it being closed. Everything is so secretive and we still don't know what is happening or what has gone wrong. Leaving parents thinking the worst."

Several children turned up at the school last Wednesday after they were not told about Ofsted's investigation into the allegations.

Lisa Troop, of Ofsted's early years regulatory team, explained: "We have suspended the registration because we have received concerns of a safeguarding nature that require investigation by Ofsted and other outside agencies."

Reading Borough Council’s early years team held an emergency meeting on Friday to find alternative provisions for the children affected.

A council spokesman said: "We are aware Bubbles Nursery, a privately run nursery, has been closed by Ofsted who will be sending letters to parents explaining the situation.

"The council’s sole involvement has been working to find alternative nursery provision for those parents and children who are affected.

"Parents affected by closure who wish to discuss options can call the council’s family information service on (0118) 937 3777 or go to www.reading.gov.uk/servicesguide to view options."

A letter, sent to the parents, said the suspension would remain to allow "any necessary steps to be taken to eliminate or reduce the risk of harm".

A spokesman for GML added: "The welfare of the children we care for is paramount. We acted swiftly and are working with Ofsted on an investigation at Bubbles nursery in Whitley.

"In line with Ofsted procedures, the nursery will be closed during the investigation and Ofsted have asked us not to comment on specifics.

"We recognise the uncertainty and worry this has caused for parents and staff alike and are working hard with Reading Borough Council, as guided by Ofsted, to help keep parents informed and to find alternative nursery places."
