THE FORMER MP for Reading East is in line for a golden, tax payer funded goodbye.

Early on Friday morning Rob Wilson lost his seat to Labour's Matt Rodda by 3,700 votes, leaving the Conservative politician out of a job after 12 years serving the constituency.

It is not all bad news for Mr Wilson however.

MPs defeated in their attempt to be reelected receive a payout equal to double the statutory redundancy payment.

For an MP who leaves office following 11 years service, the handout is likely to be around £14,850.

While that is less than half as much as the previous £33,000 maximum sweetener, a £53,950 'winding up budget' will be provided to pay for Mr Wilson's staff costs and any outstanding contractual commitments.

The Chronicle attempted to ask Mr Wilson about the payment, but the ex-MP was cut off mid-question due to a 'bad connection'.
