FURIOUS homeowners are calling for urgent action after 'disrespectful' travellers abandoned a caravan and a pile of rubbish at the bottom of Langley Hill.

Complaints directed at West Berkshire Council have been flooding in ever since a small community decided to leave behind a scene of wreckage in Calcot.

Paul Bowyer, who has had to put up with seeing the rubbish on a daily basis, says he is 'fed up' with the lack of action taken by the council to eject travellers and he plans to stage a small protest.

He said: "For many days now we have had to put up with these disrespectful people dumping rubbish, coming and going at all hours and the council have done nothing about it.

"How can they be allowed to get away with this?

"We have just had a rise in council tax, and that is hard enough to take, but when you think that your money is going towards cleaning up behind these people it makes you sick.

"We are fed up with the state of the roadside, so my friend and I are taking it a step further than simply complaining to the council.

"We will be camping out on the road to see how long it will take for us to be moved on."

Another Calcot resident, Lauren Scarlette, said the daily struggle with travellers is a constant source of frustration to the community and she questioned if the rise in council tax will truly put an end to their misery.

She said: "They have left a mountain of rubbish at the bottom of Langley Hill. I don't know how they can get away with it.

"It seems like every year we are told by the council that they are investing money from our council tax into stopping travellers from being allowed to do this, yet every year they return.

"It is beyond a joke."

A spokesman for West Berkshire Council says it is arranging a site inspection this week with a view to cleaning up the rubbish as soon as possible.
