ALAN Cornish, a well-known and much respected Woodley businessman, has died suddenly at the age of 73.

Close friend Simon Rowland described him as "a lovely man with a heart of gold."

He added: "Alan did a lot for the local community and worked closely with many other shop owners in the Woodley Precinct. He would do anything for everybody."

Having originally been involved in the animal feeds business, Alan opened Woodley Sports and Tackle in 1981 and two years later Simon joined the shop, having previously worked for Stan Eldon Sports.

Simon was made manager in 1985 and spent 20 years working with Alan before the business was taken over by AW Sports.

During his time, Alan promoted and supported local sport in many ways.

He sponsored monthly awards via Reading newspapers, while also sponsoring individuals including cricketer Claire Taylor, one of the all-time greats of England women's cricket, and Reading footballer Tony Rougier.

He couldn't get to matches, but followed Reading FC very closely.

Alan had also helped set up the Starmaker theatre company which has produced a number of international stars, including Kate Winslet.

Although Simon left the sports shop business 10 years ago, he remained close friends with Alan, phoning in virtually every other day."

"His death has hit me and his family very hard," added Simon.

Alan, who lived in Woodley, is survived by daughter Debbie and son Daren and granddaughter Mia.

His funeral service is being held today (Thursday, 3pm) at Easthampstead Park crematorium.
