GREENFINGERED residents rose to the occasion once more as hundreds of entries were submitted for careful judging at the Southcote Gardener's Association show.

With over 460 specimens across 130 categories ranging from home baking to the best of the allotments the 53rd annual competition saw strong contenders all around.

Visitors were welcomed to browse the tables laden with produce as the filed into the sports hall at Blessed Hugh Faringdon School last Saturday.

Kate Leask managed to rake in an impressive collection of awards taking home the Presidents Cup, fruit cup, the cut flower cup, the fuchsia cup, rose cup and the show tray award.

Southcote Gardener's Association chairman Ken Tugday handed out the prizes and congratulated members on the continuing success of the show which, he said, "always produced entries of the highest quality".

Paul Manning, member of the association, said: "The many visitors couldn't fail to be impressed with the high standard of entries reflecting the hard work invested by the members over the summer, and with over 100 photos on display the photography competition was particularly well contested."

Among the non-produce winners and floral champions was the 2015 Great Disaster certificate which was awarded to Mick Fowkes for an enormous, twisted, orange beetroot.
