A TREASURE trove of household items makes a hardware shop a contender for a Reading Retail Award. Terrys in Caversham’s St Martin’s Precinct has received multiple nominations in the My Favourite Shop category of the awards that celebrate the best of the retail environment. Terry Woods, of Caversham, who owns the shop that is run by his son Matt, said it is the first time he has entered the awards and was thankful customers had put them forward for a nomination. The 67-year-old said: “We have been in business for 35 years and had the Caversham shop for 25 years. “As it is a significant birthday I decided that we really ought to go for this award. If we were nominated I thought it would be nice. “We are a family run shop, not only me and my son Matt, but we employ a mother and daughter team and that is a key to its success too. “We also feel our customers are our friends. Not only do we see people coming in as children and then grow up as adults but now their children too.” The shop is packed full of household items, toys, and DIY equipment, and Mr Woods also runs a picture framing service. He said: “I’m sure that if one of those high street gurus came into the shop they would tell us we are doing it all wrong, that we have too much stock — but it works for us.” Sue Hiscock said she nominated the shop because it was “a very rare and treasured establishment indeed.” She added: “Excellent and friendly staff always eager and willing to help and indeed go that extra mile, nothing ever seems too much trouble.” Margaret Anne Hall also nominated the shop in the ‘My Favourite Shop’ category. She said: “It is a shop where you are always served with a smile. “You can nearly always find what you are looking for and if you cannot the owners will try very hard to look for you, if you are prepared to wait. Truly my favourite shop.” There are only a few more weeks to go before entries close for the retail competition on Monday, July 6. There are eight categories where businesses can nominate themselves for an award including promotional initiative, multiple and independent retailer of the year, manager, trainee, and shooting star of the year as well as the best out-of-town retail shop and top of the tree in the health, beauty and well-being category. Customers can nominate in four categories that include their favourite shop, restaurant of the year, service with smile and the best cafe, coffee and lunch establishment. The awards ceremony will be held in September. Visit www. readingretailawards.co.uk A TREASURE trove of household items makes a hardware shop a contender for a Reading Retail Award.
