Safraz Qayum broke into a house in Mancherster Road, Newtown, and stole Asian gold.
The electronic tag he was wearing as a result of a previous conviction proved that the 38-year-old was in the house at the time of the burglary.
Sergeant Laura Murray, of Reading police station, said: “Safraz Qayum was confirmed as the offender because he was wearing a Buddi GPS tracker tag as part of his involvement with the Integrated Offender Management team.
"This provided essential evidence to secure the conviction."
The 38-year-old, of no fixed abode. was jailed by a judge sitting at Reading Crown Court on Friday after being convicted by a jury of one count of burglary on October 3, 2014.
