NME/Radio One Stage on Friday

SUNDERLAND quintet Frankie And The Heartstrings have already caused quite a stir in their first year together.

Describing their music style as “sophisticated pop music that both teeny boppers and coffin dodgers could enjoy” they play Reading twice in two days - first at the festival warm up party at the Oakford Social Club on Thursday, August 26, and on Friday, August 27, on the NME Stage bringing with them their romantic view of music and literature inspired songs.

Emerging from the north, they formed in a rather ingenious way - over cocktails served in the Sunderland pub where Frankie was the landlord.

Guitarist Michael McKnight said: “It was over a Heartstrings cocktail (Mailbu and Lilt served in a pineapple). We all just shared similar interests in music and films and thought we should start a band together and see what happens.”

After forming last year they express disbelief at the events of the past 12 months and Michael added: “If someone had told me last year that I would be playing in Reading twice in two days I would not have believed them. We can’t wait, both gigs will be really special for us. If we could still be going in five years I’d be thrilled and if we could have worked our way up to the main stage at Reading it would be even better.”

Frankie And The Heartstrings count their 2010 high points as performing at Glastonbury and headlining the lake stage at Latitude.
