Review: A Doll's House at Wokingham Theatre
THE ending of Henrik Ibsen's famous play caused much controversy when first published - wives were not expected to walk away from their marriage and families despite oppressions at home.
Consequently the play, set as it is around Christmas, is usually performed in a dark and sombre setting and it was a delight to see this production set in a much brighter manner that, for me at least, both contrasted with and complimented the storyline.
Nora Helner (a charming portrayal by Nicky Allpress) was treated almost as a child by her husband Torvald (Steve Hall), unaware that by borrowing money from Nils Krogstad (Mike Allpress) she had actually saved his life when he was ill.
Nora's friend Kristine Linds (Katie Hamilton) solved the blackmail problem by proposing to Nils but the incriminating evidence had already been posted.
Regular visitor and family friend Dr. Rank (Jerry Radburn) revealed he also had a secret or two he had kept concealed for many years.
Director Hedda Bird ensured we clearly saw the major changes each of the main characters went through as the play progressed, presenting the audience with a very entertaining evening's entertainment.
