Review: The Importance Of Being Earnest at Progress Theatre
THIS play is probably the best comedy in the English language and the young members of Progress Youth Theatre performers did themselves proud with their portrayals of the characters from Wilde's masterpiece.
Sam Pemberton (Algy) and Chris Biddle (Jack) admirably captured the pompous and self-righteous characters they were portraying, while the objects of their love, Emma Stubbs (Gwendolyn) and Emma Baggot (Cecily) demurely concealed their true feelings for their suitors.
Emma Read-Davies was excellent as the overbearing Lady Bracknell, delivering her lines in true autocratic fashion.
In the supporting roles, Imogen Eley (Miss Prism), James Mould (Dr Chasuble), Jack Jones (Lane) and Nathan Hamblin (Merriman) all gave convincing performances.
Occasionally, the hard work of this excellent cast was let down through lack of attention being paid to the detail in their costumes.
