Outside:inside Festival
THE epic bonanza of arts that is the annual Outside:Inside festival had it's official launch on Thursday night, and the whole thing left The Guide girls keen to experience the plethora of music, art, poetry, theatre, film and comedy events that will be popping up at various locations all over Reading from July 9-30.
After a screening of a film of highlights from last year's festival for VIP (I say!) guests in Bang and Olufsen in Market Place, we all piled outside to recline on deckchairs, nibble delectable cupcakes and watch the frankly brilliant London poet Joshua Idehen fight stoically with the rumbles of the buses going by to wow us all with the energy, rhythm and knowing humour of his crafted, funky words. This was followed by an unplugged set from the Whitworth brothers, Theo and Lucas, from Oxford band Spring Offensive, who played mostly originals but dropped in a locals-pleasing cover of a Cooper Temple Clause song (although, quite frankly, their own stuff sounded miles better).
The pair are psyched for the festival, and Theo probably echoed the thoughts of many a music-fan who has got bogged down at Glastonbury or lost their tent at Bestival when he said: "I am a big fan of long-running festivals, the ones which run over a month or so, they are generally much more varied and eclectic than three day festivals in a muddy field!"
Headliners for the Outside:Inside fest include Lee 'Scratch' Perry, The Fall and Rabbit's Foot Experimental Comedy Club.
