Tommy Sanders is Tap Tap.

TOMMY Sanders is the talented and take-him-home-to-your-mum lovely frontman with Pete And The Pirates - but also labelmates Tap Tap.

His one-man side project, made physically possible with the help of some musically-minded friends, gets an airing at Play tonight thanks to new promo outfit Sacred Cow.

It all started out with a release for fun, Lanzafame...

"They were all just home recordings that I did on my own with some help," said Tommy.

"My brother did a bit of drumming and Peter did some singing, and it got picked up in America by some influential blogs."

Like with the Pirates, Tommy's distinctive vocals and hapless, wistful lyrics are stamped all over Tap Tap.

He said: "It's just me. I really enjoy the control element to it. I like writing songs and being in control of how they sound and how they turn out as finished products.

"Although it's great to be in a band with your friends I guess I'm more of a solo writer.

"I've never had time to concentrate on Tap Tap so much because Pirates takes up so much time, but now I've managed to record a second album (On My Way).

"It was very piecemeal but that was engineered by someone else so it's got a more consistent feel to it. It's got a sound where the first didn't quite so much."

He's only just started performing the new stuff live, though.

"There's no set band," said Tommy. "They tend to be different people - whoever's around to help really.

"On Thursday it's gonna be a guy called Anthony from the Hot Silk Pockets, Peter Cattermoul on guitar and a guy called Brett on bass.

"I think I've done four or five shows now, in London so far. It's good to get out of London."

London's loss is Reading's gain.

Sacred Cow presents Tap Tap at Play in Milford Road, Reading, tonight (Thursday) at 7pm. £7 advance.
