Hammers eager to nail down second

RAIN once again had the major say on the Reading & District Sunday League programme, with over half the scheduled games falling prey to waterlogged pitches.

There was a complete washout in the Senior Division, with all four games potsponed, but there was limited action in the lower divisions.

Premier Division leaders Diamond Black saw their game at Kidmore End cancelled, and duly saw their 10 point advantage cut to seven by Sunday lunchtime.

Woodley Hammers bounced back to form after three straight defeats in the league to move up to second spot with a 2-0 success at Earley United.

Former Stevie B's man Gordon Ritchie made his first start up front for Hammers, and made an instant impact by contributing to both goals.

The first came when left back Warren Baxter released Ritchie down the line and he squared for Mark Ashby to finish well.

And Ritchie grabbed the second himself when he powered home a header from a Tom Williams corner to make it 2-0 at the break.

That proved to be the end of the scoring, as Hammers failed to take their chances in front of goal, while a solid back four were able to keep Earley at bay.

116 Exiles are level on points with Hammers in third spot as they secured a fourth straight league win with an exciting 5-3 success over Bulmershe Old Boys.

Exiles seemed to be cruising to victory as they established a four-goal lead by half-time, inspired by Shaun Bannon.

He hit a terrific hat-trick - the first of which came direct from a corner - and added to a delightful lob from Matt Cozens it seemed the game was already over as a contest.

However, Stuart Clark made three "inspirational" changes at half-time for OB's that turned the match on its head as Dan Mattinley, Matt Seymour and Drew Tipper pulled the visitors back to within a goal.

Exiles keeper Ben Green had to be in top form to prevent them snatching an equaliser, before the hosts wrapped up the points when Ben Callow finished off a sweeping counter-attack.
