PREMIER Division side Kidmore End caused the surprise of the round to send Abbey Rangers crashing out of the Tilehurst Charity Cup at the first hurdle.

Kidmore trailed 3-1 at one point, but still looked set to bow out of the competition as Abbey led 4-3 moving into stoppage time.

But a late own goal sent the game to extra-time, before End eventually got the better of a thrilling 10-goal encounter.

Abbey struck first at a blustery Cintra Rec, Jamie Pearce opening the scoring before the hosts went two-up shortly afterwards.

Kidmore halved the deficit on the half hour thanks to a sensational 25-yard volley from Matt Walker, only for Rangers to re-establish their two-goal advantage almost immediately.

That's the way it stayed until the break, as Rob Dighton saw his effort hit both posts before bouncing away to safety.

But the front man did not have to wait long to find the net as his terrific 30-yard strike flew in to make it 3-2 five minutes after the restart.

Once again, Abbey netted almost straight from the restart, but Dighton's second of the game made it 4-3 with half an hour still to play.

End threatened an equaliser on several occasions, but time looked to be slipping away from them when sub Dave Barrett's injury-time cross was diverted into his own net by a Rangers defender.

That seemed to demoralise Rangers, and it was End who always seemed the more likely in the extra half hour.

They went ahead for the first time in the game five minutes into the extra period, sub James Day outmuscling and outpacing the home defence to make it 5-4.

And things were wrapped up with 10 minutes to play, Barrett converting star man Dighton's cross to send his side into the second round.
