The 3m synchro duo came into the 2015 season off the back of two bronze medals and a silver from the final three legs.

Silverware has not yet been forthcoming as a team this campaign, with consecutive fourth-place finishes in Beijing and Dubai. Laugher however enjoyed an outing to savour in the 3m springboard in Dubai when he became the first non-Chinese diver to win any event at this year’s World Series and just the second Briton, behind diving flagbearer Tom Daley, to win gold at that level.

And while pleased for his close friend, training partner and flatmate, Mears insists Laugher’s history-making performance can rub off on the two of them when they compete in the back-to-back legs in Russia and London at the end of April.

“I’m feeling really good about things at the minute,” said Mears. “The first two legs have been really successful and we’ve had some really good battles on the boards although there is still room for improvement.

“Me and Jack are in a good place, we’ve had a couple of fourth-place finishes but we know we can be pushing higher, third, seconds and then some wins as well.

“We know we are not far off. Jack has been absolutely fantastic on the World Series stage. We are training really well and there is definitely a lot more to come from us.

“Last season we got two bronze medals and a silver. I did that with hardly any training and an ankle injury.

“I know I’m in a lot better shape this season, there’s been no setbacks, so when it comes to Russia and London, I can’t wait to see what I can do.”

Ex-Willink School pupil Mears and the team will head to Kazan for the third leg from April 24-25 before travelling to the English capital the following weekend to dive in front of a home crowd at the London Aquatics Centre.

The 22-year-old is no stranger to the pool, having finished fifth and ninth in the 3m synchro and 3m springboard respectively at London 2012 as well as fourth in the former at last year’s World Series.

And while it is set up to be a busy few days for the British diving team, Mears (pictured right) admits he can’t wait to get back and compete in London.

“It can be difficult travelling to and from different countries in quick succession, especially with the time difference,” he added.

“But that is part of the World Series, it’s a great competition and there is always a great vibe at the events.

“London is a fantastic pool, I just love competing there. I have so many amazing memories from London 2012 and it’s always a pleasure to go back.

“Also you get the crowd as well, they are so loud and really build up the atmosphere. I’m really looking forward to it.”
