In Blues’ first ever European indoor competition, held in Lithuania, they went unbeaten to secure the runners-up spot behind winners Gintra Strekte Uni.

It looked as though they might be pipped at the post as they trailed Dundee Wanderers from the third minute in their final group match.

But Maguire beat goalkeeper of the tournament Carmin Dow in the last minute to rescue a draw for Blues and leave them a point above Dundee in the final standings.

Reading’s trip was largely funded by club supporters and the players did not let their fans down as they went unbeaten over the three-day tournament.

They got off to a perfect start as a hat-trick from captain Emma Thomas led them to a 5-2 win over Turkish side Kecioren Baglum.

Helen Richardson-Walsh and Alex Danson also netted in the victory and were both on the scoresheet again in a 4-4 draw with HC Rotweiss Wettingen.

Maguire bagged the other two goals as Blues enjoyed a decent first day in Siauliai.

They kicked off Saturday with a 4-1 win over Royal Antwerp thanks to a hat-trick from Danson and early second-half strike from Ellie Cockburn.

Victory put Blues in contention for promotion and they underlined their quality with a 2-2 draw against Gintra Strekte Uni.

Danson twice equalised for Blues and Sarah Ellis also pulled off some good stops to help set up the deciding clash with Dundee.

Reading return to outdoor action this Saturday when they go to Sutton Coldfield in the Investec Premier Division.
