READING Rockets will begin the defence of their National Trophy crown this weekend when they take on league and trophy newcomers Medway Park Crusaders on Saturday at their regular home of Rivermead Leisure Complex (6.30pm tip-off), writes Liz Edwards.
The game will be the first competitive outing for either team although both clubs have been in pre-season action leading up to the match-up between the two sides.
The following day sees the Berkshire outfit travel to Chichester to commence their National Cup campaign, a competition they were victorious in three years ago.
The University of Chichester Thunder play in EBL Division Four and could be a major upset if they manage to pull off an unlikely win against the Rockets who have only ever once lost to lower league opposition.
Rockets' Head Coach Samit Nuruzade, who is returning for his second season at the helm, is really looking forward to getting back into competitive action, however knows his team will have to work hard if they are to repeat the successes of last season.
He said: "I can't wait to get the season started and to work with the returning players and the new ones we have brought in. It certainly is a different looking squad this season and we will have to once again push ourselves beyond our limits to be able to challenge for any honours.
"What we do on the practice floor, the way we go about understanding the game, and the preparation we continue to have for every game will be paramount for us to be successful. It is a big challenge ahead but one we are definitely all relishing as we begin against Medway on Saturday."
In the lead up to this weekend's clashes, the Rockets have been boosted by the return of young English point guard Matt Guymon who rejoins the Berkshire club for a second season.
The 6'5 Southampton-born talent was named the most valuable player (MVP) in Rockets National Trophy final win over Leeds Carnegie last season and Rockets' Director of Coaching, Matt Johnson is pleased to see him return.
He said: "Matt is an excellent English talent who last year contributed a significant amount on court. The goal for him is to continue to develop his game at both ends of the floor as well as gaining confidence in the lead guard role.
"We are definitely pleased to have him back and are expecting more from him both on and off the court as he continues to not only to help the team, but develop as an individual."
Rockets then venture into the unknown on Sunday as they take on Chichester who are in fact in the same league as the Berkshire club's nursery team and Rockets Assistant Coach JP Campbell will be wary of what is a potential banana skin for the EBL Division One team.
He said: "This weekend is about taking one game at a time so we will look ahead to Sunday's game after Saturday, however, we are well aware that Chichester will be up for causing an upset and advancing as far as they can in this prestigious competition."

Report commentNice and quite useful blog. Would like to say that stock market hardly gives any second chance. Once opportunity lost means it’s gone forever. Now the biggest question is how to grab trading opportunities every time we trade?
Well here comes the technical analyses handy. Just rely on research rather than your guts feeling and one should stop speculating in the Share market.
Follow few basic trading rules and we are sure one can earn huge amount in the Indian stock market only by trading in NSE and BSE
