Tag tournament proves a big hit
CROSFIELDS School hosted a record number of primary school children at its fifth annual 'tag rugby' tournament.
A total of 28 boys and 16 girls teams of under nines and under eights from 24 schools across Berkshire competed in a round robin event in the brilliant sunshine on the Crosfields pitches. The children displayed some great tagging techniques and ball handling skills and spectators were treated to some very exciting rugby.
London Irish Rugby Football Club once again offered their support to the event. Ben Lee, London Irish Rugby Football Club Schools Manager presented each team with a rugby ball donated by Crosfields School at the end of the day and every child received a certificate confirming they had taken part. London Irish mascot 'Digger' the Irish wolfhound also came along and proved as popular as ever with the children.
London Irish also donated two sets of tickets to see a match. These were awarded to two teams for 'fair play'. Oaklands School in Crowthorne were awarded the 'Girls Fair Play Award' and Pangbourne Primary School were awarded the 'Boys Fair Play Award'.
Primary schools taking part were: Ascot Heath Junior School, Beechwood Primary School (Woodley), Birch Copse Primary School (Tilehurst), Bradfield C of E Primary School, Caversham Primary School, Churchend Primary School (Tilehurst), Colleton, Primary School (Twyford), Coombes Junior School (Arborfield), Crosfields School, Downsway Primary School (Tilehurst), Farley Hill Primary School, Garland Junior School (Burghfield Common) , Harmans Water Primary School (Bracknell), Long Lane Primary School (Tilehurst), Meadow Vale Primary School (Bracknell), Oaklands Junior School (Crowthorne), Oakley C of E Junior School (Basingstoke), Pangbourne Primary School, St Annes RC Primary School (Caversham), St Mary's School (Henley), Shiplake C of E Primary School , Whitegrove Primary School (Bracknell), Whiteknights Primary School (Reading), and Winnersh Primary School
This was one of three events which Crosfields hosts annually for primary school children - football in the Autumn and rugby and cross country in the Spring term. The aim is for children to take advantage of Crosfields' extensive sports pitches and ground of over 40 acres and enjoy an afternoon of competitive sport. The cross country event will be held on March 29.
Director of Sports Gareth Edwards commented: "I would like to welcome all competitors, staff, families and friends to our fifth Primary Schools Year 3/4 "Tag Rugby" Festival. I do hope that all the children enjoy the afternoon and I am sure that there will be some exciting rugby on show in the boys and girls competitions."
Jonathan Wansey, Crosfields' Headmaster, added: "We have seen fantastic displays of sporting talent and the atmosphere has been incredible with so many children taking part and enjoying their rugby.
"Thank you to the Crosfields sports department for organising such a superb event and to London Irish whose support has contributed greatly to the day."
