READING'S Ryan Bonifas suffered UK School Games heartache as he narrowly missed out on a medal in the high jump in Cardiff.

The 15-year-old was forced to settle for fourth place at the Cardiff International Stadium after registering a best jump of 1.90m.

Wales' Adam Davies also posted a mark of 1.90m while Billy Falconer and Jordan Roach took gold and silver respectively - but Forest School pupil missed out on a place on the podium after recording more failures.

"It could have gone better but that's how it goes sometimes," said Bonifas - who picked up silver at the English Schools Championship.

"I was looking to get a medal while I was here but I've still got next year. I broke my personal best last week and that now stands at 1.94m but hopefully I can go higher this season."

And there was more disappointment for sprinter Funto Fabunmi-Alade as she was forced to pull out of the 200m final with a leg injury.

The 15-year-old - who hails from Streatham Hill in London - picked up the strain in warm-up on Sunday morning.

But the Leighton Park School pupil - who clocked 25.36 seconds in her heat - has vowed to return stronger before the end of the season.

"I started the year really strongly but it has been a bit down hill from there," she said. "My heat was the best time I'd ran in a while so I'm trying to think positively."

Meanwhile, Reading Blue Coat School pupil Sam Maguire clocked 14.30 seconds in the 100m hurdles heats but it wasn't enough to see him through to the final.

The 15-year-old said: "This is my first year at this level and it's more competitive. The weekend's been good, but I wanted to perform a bit better to be honest."

The Youth Sport Trust is working to enhance physical education (PE) and sporting opportunities for young people. Funding through the Department of Culture, Media and Sport has been awarded through Legacy Trust UK, to develop the UK School Games each year until 2011.
