SIX club records were broken as Reading AC’s veteran athletes put in some great performances at their home league match at Bracknell.

Just 10 days after setting a personal best time in the Edinburgh Marathon, Karen Burles returned to track competition to win both the W35 A race 100m (13.9secs) and 400m (65.0).

Her 400m time broke the W40 club record which had stood since 1989, while Wendy Lewis won the W50 100m race (15.3) in a new club-best.

Meryl Austin won the W50 long jump by more than one metre, and set a new W50 club record (4.10m).

Stella Bacon established two new W70 records as she finished fourth in both the javelin (14.34m) and hammer (13.64m).

Finally, Jan Drzewiecki broke the M60 club shot putt record with a throw of 9.04m, which placed him third on the evening.

A selection of good performances helped the women come second, led by Julie Wilson winning the W50 hammer (31.70m) and coming second in the javelin (18.31m).

In the high jump, Lewis (W50), and Lucy Daniells (W35), both cleared 1.20m to finish second in their respective age categories.

Daniells was also second in the W35 100m B race (15.2), and Lee Fellowes was second in the W35 400m B race (70.3).

In the 1,500m, Debbie Taylor was narrowly beaten in the W50 race as she clocked 5m 41.4, while Sue Francis was third in the W35 A race (5:25.4) and Claire Mills was second in the B race as she set a new personal best time of 5:56.3.

The final track event was a medley relay with the four stages being 200m (Burles), 200m (Fellowes), 400m (Mills) and 800m (Daniells).

The team were leading the race until the final lap when, despite a great effort from Daniells, she was chased down by Radley AC’s fast 800m runner and the team finished second (5:02.3).

For the men’s side, there were wins for Hari Sewell (M50 100m, 13.1) and Justin Plank (M35 long jump, 4.98m).

Plank was also second in the M35 high jump (1.45m) and third in the M35 100m A race (12.9).

Bob Lewis (M50) made a welcome return to the team and took second place in a fast M35 100m B race (13.0) against younger athletes.

Michael Dzandu took second place in the M35 shot (8.34m) and third in the hammer (22.67m).

Following his record-breaking shot, the impressive Drzewiecki took third place in the M50 hammer (29.34m).

Dave Shields secured third place in the M50 long jump (4.13m) and in the 5,000m, Colin Simpson came third in the M50 in 19:32.1.

In the medley relay, the men’s team (Dzandu, Plank, Sewell and Bradshaw) ran very well to finish third (4:30.4), with the side coming fifth overall at the meeting.
