READING Racers head into action for the first time this year on Saturday when they begin the defence of their Southern Development League title.

The Racers will face Exeter Falcons in a home match at Eastbourne – their adopted home while they search for a new home in the Reading area – after their only warm-up match was cancelled due to rain a month ago.

Last season, after eight years of inactivity due to the loss of their Smallmead Stadium, a Reading team was entered into the newly formed SDL, aimed at giving young riders their first step into team racing. They were crowned champions in September after completing the eight-match programme unbeaten.

Reading will track four of their six-strong squad on Saturday, with newcomers Jamie Bursill and Rhys Laker (both aged 17) lining up alongside the returning – and newly-appointed captain – Stephen Whitehouse.

Also making his debut is 15-year-old Dan Gilkes, who has earned rave reviews and goes straight into the team at No.1.

The Racers' two most experienced riders, William O’keefe (17) and Kyle Roberts (18), will sit this match out, hoping to get the call for their next contest on May 12.

Reading's management team are confident this will be another good year while acknowledging that last year’s unbeaten record will be difficult to replicate.

Co-team manager Gene Carter said: “This league is all about giving the youngsters experience. Of course we want to keep winning, and seeing the lads progress is a real bonus”.

Saturday’s Line Ups:

Reading Racers: 1. Dan Gilkes 2. Rhys Laker 3. Stephen Whitehouse 4. Jamie Bursill.

Exeter Falcons: 1. Stevie Anderson 2. Saul Bulley 3. James Chattin 4. Mick Sutton.
