READING teenager Katie ‘Lights Out’ Lane has captured her first national boxing title.

The 14-year-old star further enhanced her reputation by winning the Junior Cadet National Championships in Rotherham recently.

And such has been her rise in the sport that she was invited to an England Boxing training camp in Tamworth last weekend.

Mel Corrigan, her coach at Berinsfield Boxing Club in Wallingford, said: “We’re so proud of Katie, it’s the third girls’ title the club has won this year.

“She works extremely hard and deserves to be a boxing success.

“She is also a lovely girl and we are delighted for her and her family.”

Lane’s first semi final in the 60-63kg category saw her up against Woking opponent Abbie Lea.

Lane dominated the contest from the very start, forcing two standing counts before the referee stopped it in the third round to avoid further punishment for Lea.

“She blew her out of the water,” added Corrigan. “It was an excellent performance.”

But Prospect School pupil Lane faced a tough task in the final against defending champion, Ammie Lee Phillips, from Darleston.

However, she rose to the challenge once again and her superior workrate in the first round shocked her opponent to the core.

Lane upped the tempo again in the second round when some meaty blows forced a standing, eight-second count from the referee.

But when the fight continued and there was no let up from Lane, the referee had no choice but to stop the contest as the Reading boxer claimed her first national belt.
