OXFORD Road in Reading is not the safest of places for football fans – at least that is what one Hellenic League club is suggesting.

Windsor were due to play Woodley United in Scours Lane last Monday, but the game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch and re-arranged for March 26.

The two sides, however, are due to meet at the same venue in the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup next Monday.

Windsor provide supporters with travel directions and it contains this warning – “the ground is 2.5 miles from the station and does involve walking down Oxford Road. Your best bet would be to grab a cab from the station if you value your health and possessions!”

  • BORUSSIA Teeth FC received a name check when BBC TV were promoting the FA People’s Cup last weekend.

There could possibly be another club with the same title, but it’s more than likely the Beeb were talking about the team that plays in the Reading Sunday League.

Several local teams are expected to take part in the free-to-enter five-a-side competition which is open to male, female and disability players across 18 categories – ranging from under14s through to veterans (over-35s).

  • MARK Simmons, the ex-Reading and Berkshire cricketer, has paid tribute to Geoffrey Clift, the former Berkshire CC president and joint manager of the county’s Bantams and Under 25 sides who died last week.

Simmons was the 18-year-old skipper when the younger side won the national Hilda Overy Trophy in 1974.

“Geoffrey did so much for young cricketers in his time. I personally owe him so much,” said Mark, who sadly will miss the 98-year-old’s funeral service at Cheltenham Crematorium on January 25 (3.15pm) as he is currently in Australia.

  • SORRY to hear Reading-resident Tony Kingston has left Henley Town FC after 36 years service, which included 26 as secretary.

He said his resignation was due to a disagreement with the new committee’s future plans for the club which withdrew from the Hellenic League last month.
