JOHN Eatwell’s superb away winning rink and David Brown’s remarkable comeback against high-flying Loddon Vale, Basingstoke, allowed Rivermead gain four points to retain their mid-table place in the Wessex League Eastern Region, despite slipping to a 93-67 reverse.

Eatwell got off to a flying start, picking up a seven on the first end, and resisted the inevitable response from Loddon Vale to maintain the shot difference and record a fine 26-17 win.

“It was a superb match” said lead Rod Brown. “John and Peter Cowen were quite brilliant and Geoff Tombs had the game of his life.”

While Peter Slatford’s home rink were engaged in a neck and neck battle (10-9 down after 16 ends) before losing 17-12, things were looking bleak for Brown when his rink stood 16-8 behind at the halfway stage.

However, with Dave Miles and John Jeffrey finding their form up front they built heads for Richard West and Brown to pull the rink back to all square at 19-19 going into the last end. The rink maintained their momentum picking up three to hand in a 22-19 card.
