Reading Ultimate Frisbee took full advantage of the reserve spot to take European bronze in Caorle, Venice.
After finishing third at UK Nationals, they were given a reprieve to compete after another side dropped out.
Reading began the tournament by beating reigning UK champions Scotland Black Eagles 13-11, the first time they had defeated their rivals in six attempts.
They then saw off Czech team Os Zla 15-9, but lost to Dutch team Grut 15-8 in the final game of the opening day, giving their opponents a measure of revenge for their 2016 final defeat.
In a live-streamed game, Reading opened up the following day with a narrow 15-13 victory against Sweden’s VIF, setting up a semi final against Colorado, a very strong German team boasting an array of international players.
Reading battled gamely, but were ultimately edged out 13-12.
A very close game unfolded with Colorado holding their nerve to take the win 13-12 after an uncharacteristic error by Reading.
However, they again showed their versatility in the bronze-medal match, relying heavily on their zone defence and player-of-the-match Joyce Kwok – who stamped her authority on the game – to secure a 15-10 victory and their third European medal in as many years.
Reading’s efforts in finishing third have earned them a first-ever spot at next year’s World Club Championships in Cincinnati, USA.
