BERKSHIRE Renegades completed a fantastic end to their season when they held on to beat Wembley Stallions 20-17 on in the Britbowl 31 Division 2 Southern Final.

It was the first ever silverware in the club’s 12-year history since reforming and came as underdogs against the previously unbeaten number one seeds.

It was Renegades who broke the deadlock when quarterback Dan Storey found wide receiver Henry Feurtado for a 30-yard touchdown.

The kick was missed, but the ensuing kick-off was then fumbled and returned to the Stallions five-yard line by Brian Lunga, and full back Andrew Neilson slipped in for the score. The kick was completed and the Renegades led 13 -0.

Wembley hit back after a fumbled punt gave them good field position, and they converted to make it 13-7.

Stallions landed a field goal in the second quarter, but MVP Curtis Williston responded with a fine touchdown. With the kick landed, Berkshire led 20-10.

Both defences impressed and it took until three minutes remaining of the final quarter for Wembley to earn another seven-pointer, setting up a nerve-jangling finish.

However, Stallions were unable to get the ball back and the Renegades ran the clock down to secure a famous triumph.

General manger James White said: “Victory is the culmination of the hard work and sacrifices made by the players, coaches and staff since we started pre-season training in January.

“Our thoughts now turn to 2018, when the team will be playing in Division One of the British American Football League and continuing to grow the club both on and off the field.”

Williston added: “This is just reward for all the hard word by the offensive line who have been solid all season, the other running backs and wide receivers who have scored and extended drives, the defensive unit who hustled every game, the special teams and coaching staff.”
