READING’s Felix Thomis represented England against some of the best young prospects in Europe at the EuroMini Championships in France.
The annual event in Schiltigheim attracts many top players in the 12 and 13-year-old brackets. The 12-year-old Thomis, a student at Leighton Park School, picked up some good wins in the four qualifying stages, including beating both Luuk Houtgast of the Netherlands and Israel’s Mark Polovets 3-1.
His overall results were not enough to go into the main knockout draw, but he performed well in the consolation event, beating opponents from Belarus, Slovakia and Czech Republic to reach the semi-finals, where his run was ended by Quentin Anquetil of the host nation.
A subsequent defeat to Italy’s Federico Costassa meant he had to settle for fourth place.
