AT Beat Five (Rose Kiln Lane) on the River Kennet, anglers from Tilehurst Royal British Legion were in action, writes Alan Hughes.

The winner was Tony Tibble who managed to collect small roach dace and perch using the stick float method and he took 9lbs 14ozs to the scales for top spot.

In second place was Chris Humphreys who weighed in 9lbs 10ozs of similar species, while third place went to Mick Fairey with 8lbs 7ozs.

It was agreed by the anglers this was the best result on the venue for several years with an average weight for the 10 anglers of over 6lbs each.

Courage/SE headed to Beat Four and this venue proved to be the most difficult on the day. John Jackson took first place with 3lbs 13ozs of silver fish. The same species gave Fred Jones second place with 3lbs and Graham Hawkins took third place with 2lbs 5ozs.

Tring Anglers held their match on Beat 3B section and this also showed a distinct improvement on last season.

This match was also decided with small fish and Martin Rodwell took the honours with 8lbs on stick float. Second place was claimed by Andy Allday with 7lbs 2ozs and completing the trio was Tony Beadle with 2lbs 4ozs. Several small barbel (6-8ins) were caught which is also encouraging and hopefully the recent gravel cleaning had improved barbel spawning chances.

Newtown A.C. held their match on the Thames at Sonning and match secretary Terry Smith took the honours with 3lbs 13ozs. Second place was claimed by John Clements with 1lb 3ozs and completing the trio was Kevin Strange with 13ozs. All of the anglers caught small silver fish.

Reading Fishing Club hosted an open match on Saturday at the downstream end of the Beale Trust stretch of the Thames.

This was won with silver fish taken by Malcolm Vigor who took 11lbs 1oz to the scales. In second spot was Richard Rosinski with 10lbs 15ozs and completing the top three was Peter Godfrey with 10ls 2ozs.

They followed this up with a club match on Sunday and again it was all silver fish that made up the weights. Simon Couling took the honours with 19lbs 11ozs and he was closely followed by Saturdays winner Vigor with 18lbs 15ozs.

The RDAA Tuesday Club held their match on the Thames at Sonning. Terry Littlewood took the honours with 5lbs 14ozs of silver fish and mainly bleak. George Callaghan took second spot with 4lbs 4ozs of small roach and Dave Bosher claimed third place with 3lbs 14ozs.
