FIVE of Reading AC’s veteran athletes performed well at the British Masters Championships at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, last weekend.

Julie Wilson (W50 category) collected two silver medals for the shot (9.30m) and discus (27.53m), and was also fourth in the weight throw and fifth in the hammer, where she recorded her longest throw of the season.

Susan Francis matched her 2016 performance as she finished second in the W45 1,500m with a time of 5m 19.31secs.

Hari Sewell took the bronze medal in the M50 400m (57.39) as he very nearly reeled in the silver medallist.

Fit-again Wally Franklyn was sixth in the M60 100m (13.39) and eighth in the 200m (28.07).

On the second day of the championships, there were some heavy rain showers. Nevertheless, Dave Shields recorded his longest effort of the season as he finished fourth in the M55 triple jump (9.15m).
