MARIA Tsaptsinos returned from the PG Mutual National Championships with gold, silver and bronze medals.

The 19-year-old Reading player and partner Tin-Tin Ho won the women’s doubles for the third year in a row, beating Kelly Sibley and Jo Drinkhall – making her comeback for the first time since the 2014 Commonwealth Games – in the final.

The scoreline of 3-0 (11-6, 11-9, 11-8) reflects a dominant performance by the young pair and reversed the outcome when the pairs met in the final in 2014.

“It was a good final,” said Tsaptsinos. “We were looking for revenge from three years ago. We tried to dominate best we could and I think both sides played equally as well as each other. We had our tactics, we knew what we had to do and we stuck to it.”

Tsaptsinos faced her partner Ho in the Under 21 final, a repeat of last year when Tsaptsinos won. However, this time Ho was on the right side of a tight 4-1 (12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8) scoreline.

In the women’s singles, top seed Kelly Sibley beat Tsaptsinos 4-1 (11-9, 14-12, 11-7, 13-15, 11-3) in the semi-finals, leaving her with bronze.

“Unfortunately I lost in the U21 final and to Kelly in the women’s semi-final, but I feel that my game is progressing, which is good because I’m looking for long-term improvement,” said Tsaptsinos, who is a student at the University of Nottingham, where the event was played.

“My main focus was how I was playing and how I was going to move forward.

"This tournament has been great for seeing that.”
