A SPIRITED performance led by captain Sarah Key helped CGL record a 55-40 victory against training partners Volume.

It was Volume who were quickest out of the blocks, with CGL initially struggling to keep possession of the ball, allowing the opposition to storm into an early 3-0 lead with some great feeds from WA Jen Pavey and great shooting from GA Vicky Heath.

However, CGL stepped up a gear and strong defensive pressure forced turnovers, with Key and WA Lauren Mallins making crucial interceptions.

The attacking unit began to combine well with most feeds reaching GS Jane Rees and being converted to goal, despite strong defence from Volume GK Kirstie Jordan. CGL ended the first quarter leading 12-9.

Volume fought back in the second quarter, with strong court play from WD Charmaine Nathaniel and consistent shooting from their player-of-the-match, GS Dimi Dragisic.

However, the defensive unit of GK Amy Billie and GD Katie Sanford were working hard to shut down opportunities and were ably supported by WD Clare Ramalho, who picked off several balls from around the shooting circle edge.

Having extended their advantage to six goals at the break, CGL continued to impress in the third quarter as GA Tia Hislop really found her range.

Going into the final stanza with a nine-goal advantage, CGL player-of-the-match Rees continued to show her skills and her side were ultimately comfortable winners.

  • RG7 Purple had to hold off a spirited comeback from AssessTech Theale before finally running out 52-51 winners.

Purple began superbly and raced into a 15-8 lead after an entertaining first quarter.

Katie Norris and Jo Starling were both finding the target for RG7, but their advantage was cut to 29-22 by half time.

GK Lesley Myers and GD Emma Fountain proved equally efficient for Purple at the other end of the pitch in the third period, allowing them to move 42-33 ahead.

However, Theale rallied superbly in the final quarter before falling short by the narrowest margin possible. WD Lauren Myers was the stand-out performer for the victorious side, with GD Amy Taylor taking the honours for Theale.
