WAYNE Shaw, who was spotted eating a pasty during Sutton United’s FA Cup tie defeat by Arsenal, has certainly piled on the pounds since his days with Reading FC’s youth team.

Reserve goalkeeper Shaw, who resigned on Tuesday following the FA’s announcement they were looking into the alleged betting-related incident, has seen his weight shoot up to well over 20 stone.

That must be almost twice what he weighed when he played as a young centre-back in Reading’s South East Counties League side.

Shaw was not the only ex-Reading youngster involved in Monday’s tie, as also sitting on the Sutton bench were Dan Fitchett and former Academy player Dan Spence.

But while United bowed out gracefully, Reading’s interest in the FA Cup remains.

Defender Sean Long is on loan at National League club Lincoln City, who take on the Gunners in the quarter-finals, while Ascot-born Jake Cooper, a former Forest School pupil, is on loan with Millwall who now visit Tottenham Hotspur.

Cooper was sent off for two bookable offences in the Lions’s 1-0 win over Leicester on Sunday when the scorer was Shaun Cummings, another ex-Royal.

  • FORMER Royals manager Nigel Adkins turned up at Henley Town FC on Saturday to watch his son, Nicholas, play for Sandhurst Reserves in their Hellenic League Division Two East fixture which the visitors won 3-0.

Adkins had been linked with the manager’s job at Championship strugglers Blackburn Rovers before Tony Mowbray’s appointment.

  • READING are among the hockey clubs taking part in a charity event in memory of former player and photographer Ravi Ghowry, who took his own life last September.

Fareham and Wessex will also be involved in the friendly tournament being held in Southampton on May 27 with proceeds going to CALM (the Campaign Against Living Miserably), the charity nominated by Ravi’s family.

During the day there will also be a raffle and auction with Olympic gold medallists Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh and Sam Quek having already agreed to donate items.
