A hat-trick of tries for both Arron Ross and Steve Warwick saw the visitors maintain their 100% winning record to seal the championship.

With referee Mike Radford disallowing two good-looking Abbey tries from Tim Brain - from a charge-down - and Dan Pawlett, and consistently finding fault with them, the sting went out of Abbey’s attacks early on.

To compound Abbey’s frustrations, Chippy had taken the lead in the ninth minute when No.8 Joe Morrell ran in beneath the posts for an easy conversion from centre Jamie Caswell.

The home side’s pack also held its own, and competed with Abbey’s usual line out superiority.

Abbey’s first points came on 18 minutes when an Arron Ross try and Tom Waterhouse conversion drew them level at 7-7.

The visitors added two further tries before half time. First Warwick crossed, with Waterhouse converting, and the full back then notched his own five-pointer to put his side 19-7 up.

The visitors’ tails were up and five minutes after the restart Waterhouse put Ross over for a score.

And though play was often scrappy, Abbey became more dominant as Ross and Warwick completed their hat-tricks and Waterhouse added three second-half conversions and five in all to secure the title.

Open side flanker Matt Gingell won the man-of-the-match award which he dedicated to his newborn daughter, Abigail Rose.

Abbey remain undefeated going into their final fixture of the season this Saturday when they host Chesham at Rosehill (3pm ko).

Abbey will be aiming to complete the season unbeaten, a feat they have managed only once before under Steve Willis in 1997.

Chesham stand in the way, but they lie third from bottom and lost 54-12 at home to Abbey in December when Colts winger Kaspar Strugar scored a hatrick.

Head Coach Russell Bolton has a full squad available and said: “We want to capture that champagne rugby we played mid-season, and has eluded us recently. We shall make it a great afternoon.” Flanker Joe Hallett is poised to make his 200th league appearance, joining club greats Alan Kilford, Fungai Mutepfa, Kevin Gingell, Martin Richmond and Steve Willis.
