The Glasgow-based games kicked off yesterday with the 7s event due to start tomorrow morning.

Gomez started playing rugby at Lord Wandsworth School in Basingstoke, mentored by their shrewd Head of Sports and former England, Berkshire and Reading full back Audley Lumsden.

The 22 year-old wing arrived at Holme Park four seasons ago and soon worked his way into the club’s South West Division 1 league side.

Last season he was the squad’s second highest try scorer, notching 12 in 20 appearances.

New Reading RFC chairman Andy Clark said: “During his short time at Reading RFC, Jordan has been a great club man and even helps out coaching the minis section on Sundays after playing for the first team on Saturdays.

“He has natural sporting ability and is also a very good cricket player who has also represented Barbados in that sport.”

The 7s tournament, featuring 16 countries drawn in four groups, will be played at Glasgow’s famous Ibrox Stadium this Saturday and Sunday in front of 50,000 fans.

Barbados are in a tough Group A along with Canada, New Zealand and hosts Scotland.

Clark added: “How many Reading players will ever be able to say we played against New Zealand in a competitive game? We wish Jordan all the best and we are all very proud.”
