Rams are currently training twice a week – on Tuesday and Thursday evenings – at their Old Bath Road ground and will begin their 2014/15 campaign with a home match against Barnstaple.

It is a refreshed and rejuvenated squad that is returned from the summer break along with a number of new faces that will strengthen a line-up that looks to go one better than last season’s second-placed finish, which ended in heartache as they fell to a 17-10 defeat in their final promotion play-off match away to Old Elthamians.

Flanker Andy Amor will again lead the side in the early part of the season before the expected return to action from long-term injury of elected skipper and big lock Owen Root around Christmas time.

The return of No.8 Jamie Guttridge is a boost for the Rams but several of last season’s line-up including Andy Bryans, Nigel Gumbleton, George Owen and Sean Kenneally have all left the club.

Director of Rugby Mike Tewkesbury is happy with the bulk of the squad but admits a couple of signings are needed if the club is to stay competetive.

“You’ve still got the core of the team, there’s just one or two positions where we’ll need to reinforce the squad,” he said. “One of the problems at this level - and all of the clubs are saying it - is that there are a lot of injury problems.

“Last season at this time Weston were nearly decimated and whatever you do you need an element of luck quite frankly.

“But we’ve also got to look at our strength in depth over the next few weeks as there are some youngsters coming along and we’ll see how they progress.”

New to the league this season are Somerset based sides Chard and Hornets while the Rams’ old adversaries Bournemouth, Oxford Harlequins and Exmouth all return to join Barnstaple, Bracknell, Brixham, Newton Abbot, Old Redcliffians, Weston-super-Mare, Old Patesians, and Old Centralians.

In addition to the new players the Rams are seeking, they are also looking for a Physiotherapist or Sports Therapist to accompany the side throughout the 2014/15 season and beyond.

“They need to be fully qualified to handle sports injuries,” said Rams team manager Mike Hopkins. “The candidate should be available for every game home and away during the season plus be at the club on training nights.”
