TRIES in either half from Tom Homer and Jonathan Joseph weren't enough for London Irish to topple Premiership leaders Harlequins at The Stoop.

The hosts went into the match on the back of three successive defeats in all competitions and fell behind almost immediately from the kick off.

After receiving the ball, Irish went through the phases and worked their way to the Quins line, with Homer eventually diving over to score and then adding the extras.

Nick Evans got the home side on the board with a penalty but then missed two subsequent efforts after Homer saw a long-range kick fall short.

Quins got their first try when Tom Casson burst on to an inside pass and Evans' conversion made it 10-7.

Although Irish were falling foul of the referee's whistle on numerous occasions, it was Homer who added the next penalty to level the scores.

The full-back took his - and Irish's - haul to 13 points for the half with a routine penalty before the interval.

But Quins hit back almost immediately in the second half when Dan Bowden's kick was charged down and Tom Williams scored in the corner.

Evans kicked a good conversion from out wide to edge Quins further in front before Danny Care's drop goal made it 20-13.

Yet Exiles kept plugging away and they were rewarded with a superb individual try from Jonathan Joseph, who darted past three players to score.

Homer converted to level at 20-20, only for Evans to kick a penalty and then Ross Chisholm to score a converted try.

Although Adrian Jarvis' penalty put Exiles into losing bonus point range, they were unable to take anything more from the match.

Irish are on the road again next Saturday when they go to basement side Newcastle Falcons (3pm ko).
