LONDON Irish bowed out of the Heineken Cup with a final-day loss at Pool Two winners Edinburgh.

Defeat to Cardiff Blues at the Madejski on matchday five meant Exiles travelled to Scotland knowing they had nothing to play for aside from pride.

The hosts, on the other hand, needed to better Blues' result against Racing Metro to ensure they won the group.

After Adrian Jarvis kicked Irish into the lead with a penalty, Tim Visser ran in Edinburgh's first try of the afternoon.

Greig Laidlaw converted and added a penalty either side of Jarvis' second effort to keep the hosts in front.

Laidlaw then passed to Jim Thompson to touch down and kicked the conversion to make it 20-6 at half-time.

Irish came out strongly at the start of the second half and got their only try of the game when replacement Jonathan Joseph burst free down the wing.

But Edinburgh replied with scores from Netani Talei and Lee Jones, the latter which secured a home tie against Toulouse in the quarter-finals.

Irish turn their attentions to the LV Cup next weekend when they travel to Scarlets on Saturday (6.30pm ko).
