Abbey 27, Trowbridge 29

A brave defensive effort by Abbey in the latter stages of an exciting encounter was not quite sufficient to prevent Trowbridge from taking the league points at Rosehill on Saturday.

The visitors, who outscored Abbey by five tries to three, claimed the winning score in the final minute of normal time, to sneak a 29-27 win in a game the home side led for the bulk of the second half.

Abbey fell behind to an early try before a Jim Dye drop goal got them on the board.

Gavin Dampies then scored an excellent try after a good pass from Steve Drake. And the latter's conversion gave the hosts a 10-5 lead.

Trowbridge levelled the scores with a second unconverted try before Alex Woolnough claimed Abbey's second try after good work by Tom Waterhouse and Neil Reddy.

Drake converted and then added a penalty early in the second half to give Abbey a 20-10 lead.

Trowbridge stole in front with two tries and one conversion, before Dampies' second try looked to have earned Abbey a 27-22 win.

However, the visitors rumbled over in the the final minute to steal the win.

One big positive to come out of the encounter for Abbey was the return of Eifion Robinson in the back row.

He came on to replace Bartie Carson and put in an excellent display.

ABBEY: S Drake, S Gaines, T Waterhouse (c), T Burns, G Dampies, J Dye, O Heath, T Simpson (rep N Reddy), O Charlton, J Mollett, W McQuillan, A Boswell, A Woolnough, H Williams, B Carson (rep E Robinson). Not used: A Hurst.
