REDINGENSIANS Rams closed in on a third-place finish in National Two South as they held on for a 21-14 victory at home to Canterbury on Saturday.

It was the visitors who took an 11th-minute lead when Aiden Moss broke down the left-hand touchline to score in the corner, Kyan Braithwaite adding the extras.

Rams hit back in what was a pretty dull opening 40 minutes, two Adrian Jarvis penalties ensuring they trailed by just a point at the halfway stage.

Rams moved in front early in the second half, their pack again coming to the fore as they have so often been this season.

A powerful maul was brought down just shy of the line, but young scrum half Joe Booth was able to feed Ben Henderson to crash home from close range. Jarvis added the extras and then landed a penalty to put his side 16-7 to the good.

Canterbury gave themselves a lifeline with five minutes remaining as JJ Murray went over for a converted score, but a try from Tom Vooght in stoppage time secured another victory for the hosts. Reflecting on the game, head coach Seb Reynolds said: “Both sides had clear intent to move the ball around.

"We were guilty of missing opportunities in the first half, but I was really pleased with the way we built pressure and were patient when it didn’t quite come off.

“In the second half most of the game was played in Canterbury’s half. They are a really dangerous side as we know from earlier on in the season, but twice this year we’ve done a really good job of shutting down their dangerous runners.”

On a good day for the club, Redingensians Titans moved top of Division Two of the Zoo Sports Shield. They will seal the title if they beat Colchester 2nds this Saturday.

And Reynolds added: “It’s great the Titans got the win. They’re top of the league so its been a positive year all round for the club.”

Redingensians Rams will guarantee a third-place finish if they beat Clifton away this coming Saturday (2.30pm).
