REDINGENSIANS Rams suffered a 25-19 defeat at Redruth as their four-match winning streak in National Two South came to a disappointing end.

A long journey to Cornwall was not the ideal preparation for Rams.

But their indiscipline also cost them as they received four yellow cards in the game which head coach Seb Reynolds admitted was a hurdle they couldn’t overcome.

“It was a really interesting game of rugby,” he argued. “I think both sides played poorly with the wind on their backs and actually created pressure for themselves.

“If you come down to a place like Redruth and receive four yellow cards the likelihood is you’re not going to win the game.

“We were just a little bit off our game today and unfortunately we were unable to get the victory.”

The Rams began the better of the two sides, adding the first points of the afternoon with a converted penalty from Jordan Souter.

The visitors stretched their lead to 6-0 with another Souter penalty following a neat break by Oli Cole.

But Redruth came storming back and began to dominate before crossing for an unconverted try.

Rams then picked up the first of their yellow cards when Ben Henderson was sinbinned.

Yet despite their extra man, Redruth were blown away at the scrum, with Cole demonstrating some quick thinking by popping the ball to Craig Nightingale who ran half the length of the pitch to score just right of the posts.

Redruth replied almost immediately, winning a penalty line out and taking advantage of the extra man to drive the ball over the line.

But Rams scored another try just before the break when James Baker turned the ball over before Conor Corrigan fed Steve Bryant who floored his opposite number with a hand-off before crashing over the line to give the visitors a six-point lead.

However, Redruth responded after the restart and hauled themselves back to within a point of Rams with an unconverted score.

And when Richard Kevern knocked over a penalty, the hosts led for the first time in the match.

Back came Rams who went back in front with a Souter three-pointer while they were a man down following a Nightingale yellow card which came after team mate Matt Weller had also spent 10 minutes in the sin bin.

And a fourth yellow of the day followed when Souter was also sinbinned with five minutes to go.

It was a pivotal moment as Rams were outnumbered when Redruth crossed in the corner with seconds to go to seal victory for the hosts.

Rams will be determined to bounce back on their return to action when they host Taunton Titans at Old Bath Road on Saturday, March 24.
