REDINGENSIANS Rams strengthened their grip on seventh place in the National Two South table with an impressive 15-0 win at the side directly below them, Canterbury.

It was the first time in four attempts that Rams have overcame their Kent opponents, but the opening half proved something of a sterile affair, with the most notable action seeing Canterbury centre Will Farris held up over the line while Tom Vooght was in the sin bin.

Rams moved ahead with a 38th-minute Jacob Atkins penalty, but their pack were particularly impressive in the second half, when they had to play into a strong, cold wind.

The Canterbury scrum came under increasing pressure, the line-out disintegrated and when they did have possession it was frittered away by dropped balls, careless passes and a growing penalty count.

A high tackle and the inevitable penalty gave the Rams their chance on 58 minutes, and a catch-and-drive from the line-out swept forward before lock Ollie Taylor made the touchdown for the visitors.

The conversion was missed but even at that point, with the final quarter to come, Canterbury were looking a bedraggled outfit.

The hosts soon came under more close quarter pressure where the Rams laid down a series of controlled and powerful scrums, eventually winning a penalty try which Atkins converted 15 minutes from time.

Victory was a sixth in seven games for Mike Tewkesbury’s side, who now sit nine points above their opponents with only four games remaining.

Redingensians host ninth-placed Clifton this Saturday (3pm).
