WHAT did you make of the Italy performance against England last Sunday?

Their innovative tactics – not committing men to a ruck and therefore creating no off-side line – certainly caused confusion among the spectators as well as those on the field, but England should not have taken so long to realise what was happening and should have got a grip of the situation a lot earlier.

Personally, I think this was the worst game of the weekend and very disappointing to all the fans who watched it – I would have loved to have heard what Eddie Jones said at half time in the changing rooms.

But, a win is a win, and, at least in the second half England changed their game plan and scored some good tries in their 17th win in a row.

In the other Six Nations clashes, Ireland saw off France 19-9 at the Aviva Stadium thanks to a try from Connor Murray and the kicking boots of Jonny Sexton and Paddy Jackson.

The hosts got stronger throughout the game and played some great rugby. Could this be the first choice half-back combination for Warren Gatland’s Lions squad?

And, at Murryfield, Scotland dominated the second half to get the better of Wales, 29-13, for the first time in 10 outings.

This was a great game to watch with Scotland out-playing Wales in the back row and with superb performances from Stuart Hogg again and also Hamish Watson when he came on.

I have to say Scotland could be a threat at Twickenham, when they will be aiming for their first Triple Crown since 1990.

With many of our local sides enjoying a rest, it was left to London Irish to record a 15th straight Greene King IPA Championship victory at home to London Scottish.

It was close, though, and they’ll have to improve at Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday.

This coming Saturday, Redingensians Rams visit Cinderford in National Two South, Reading Abbey host Windsor in a crucial South West One East relegation battle, and my boys Reading welcome Banbury to Holme Park.

We’re almost certainly going down, but let’s hope we can reap some revenge for their win earlier in the season.

Elsewhere, BB&O Championship side Berkshire Shire Hall entertain Wheatley.
