REDINGENSIANS Rams turned on the style in the second half as they secured a third straight National Two South victory with a 36-22 win at Barnes on Saturday, writes Matt McCrory.

The visitors made a dreadful start as they shipped two unconverted tries to Alex Crane, although they replied with one of their own through Tom Vooght, the skipper sliding over in the corner following a powerful rolling maul from his side’s forwards.

Barnes hit back, though, and despite the best defensive efforts of Jordan Souter and Steve Bryant, the hosts picked up a third try – this time converted – to make it 17-5.

Yet the remainder of the game swung decidedly in Rams’ favour. Souter and Vooght led an attack to give Mike Tewkesbury’s men good field position, before Jacob Atkins’s high kick over the Barnes try line was collected by Bryant, who bagged his third try in three games. The Atkins conversion cut the gap to 17-12.

The home side fell behind before the interval as Rams’ forwards again used the maul superbly, Ben Henderson the beneficiary with Atkins again converting. Crane went from hero to zero as he received a yellow card to add to his side’s troubles.

Redingensians continued to push on immediately after the break, with Bryant finding Souter to go over for a converted score. Atkins' penalty shortly after made it 29-17.

Barnes battled bravely and Rams were reduced to 14 men themselves when Antony Marris was sent to the bin, but their resolute defence was again outstanding to keep their opponents at bay.

And they hit the hosts with a late sucker-punch when replacement scrum half Miles Lloyd added a fifth try of the day, Atkins landing a fabulous touchline conversion.

Barnes did secure a late try bonus point on as Rupert Crossland dotted down, but Rams held on and will target a fourth straight win at home to Bury St Edmunds on Saturday (2.30pm).
