Barrett secured his third medal of the Glasgow games when he won gold with England in the 4x100m medley relay on Tuesday.

The former Theale Green School pupil, who turned 22 today, swam a brilliant third leg as England held off a strong Australian challenge to set a new Commonwealth Games record of 3mins 31:51secs.

It followed his bronze medals in the 100m freestyle relay and also the 100m butterfly.

Simon Cowen, his ex-coach at Tilehurst Swimming Club, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement and we are so chuffed for Adam.

“He really is a perfect role model for any young guys or girls out there. They can look up to Adam now and hope that one day it could be them with a gold medal around their neck."

Meanwhile, Burghfield Common diver Chris Mears also won bronze in the pool earlier today.

The former Willink School pupil finished third in the 1m springboard event.
