Meeting off after 4cm of snow
NEWBURY Racecourse's Betfair Super Saturday has been cancelled because of overnight snow and freezing conditions.
There had been optimistic noises that the meeting would beat the weather and frost covers had been down for nearly two weeks.
There was hope of tomorrow's meeting beating the weather and frost covers had been down for nearly two weeks.
However, course officials were forced to call it off after 4cm of snow fell on the Berkshire track last night.
With the likes of Long Run, Sprinter Sacre and Zarkandar due to use the race as a Cheltenham warm-up, there is a strong possibility the meeting will be rearranged.
Clerk of the course, Richard Osgood, said: "We've had to abandon. There's snow on the covers and there is no predicted rise in temperatures or rain which would help shift it."
And he added: "There have been preliminary discussions about re-staging the fixture and we are looking to hold it next week, but at this stage I know nothing more than that."
Stephen Higgins, managing director of racing and events, said: "Following significant snowfall on Thursday night, and following an inspection of the course this morning and with temperatures predicted to plummet this evening the decision has been made to abandon tomorrows fixture.
"This is an important fixture in the racing calendar and we will be entering into talks with the BHA, The Levy Board and Betfair on the possible re-staging of some of the races".
The event was set to include seven races and a royal visit from Prince Harry, who is a patron of the day's chosen charity, Walking With The Wounded.
Racegoers who have purchased raceday tickets or hospitality are advised to post their tickets, with a covering letter including full details to the racecourse and a full refund will be processed.
