FORMER Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie is training with the Royals with a view to signing.

The 33-year-old is currently without a club having been released by Derby County at the end of last season.

The one-cap ex-England international played 251 times for Villa and scored 27 goals between 1995 and 2007.

He then had spells with Stoke City, Sheffield United, Leicester City and Derby County, before finishing last season in loan at Brighton.

Royals boss Brian McDermott is keen to strengthen his midfield following the club-record £7 million sale of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.

He has already bolstered his defence by landing ex-Republic of Ireland international, Ian Harte, from Carlisle United for a nominal fee, and also luring Georgia captain Zurab Khizanishvili back to the Madejski Stadium on a season’s loan from Blackburn Rovers.

Hendrie is due to train with Reading today and McDermott hopes to tie up a deal before the end of the week.

As Hendrie was a free-agent, the deal can be completed outside of the transfer window which officially closed at 6pm yesterday.
