READING have rejected a 350,000 bid for Michail Antonio from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 22-year-old winger netted five goals in 14 appearances for the Owls during a loan spell last season which ended in promotion to the Championship.

Now Wednesday boss Dave Jones wants to sign Antonio permanently to add pace and flair on the flanks in the Championship next season.

Antonio could be surplus to requirements at Madejski Stadium following the recent signing of Garath McCleary on a free from Nottingham Forest.

But Wednesday will have to raise their offer to tempt Reading to sell.

Antonio joined Royals from Tooting & Mictcham min in 2008 but has made only six starts for the first team.

Meanwhile, former Royals boss Brendan Rodgers could threaten to scupper his old club's chances of signing Matt Phillips.

Reading were first linked with the Blackpool ace in April, forcing Seasiders boss Ian Holloway to publicly rubbish the rumour.

However, Blackpool's defeat by West Ham in the Championship play-off final could force the club to cash in on the 21-year-old ex-Wycombe Wanderers player.

Fulham and Cardiff City are said to be interested in Aylesbury-born Phillips who could cost upwards of 2.5 million.

And Rodgers' Swansea City have this week emerged as possible front-runners to land the England Under 21 star.

Rodgers - who turned down the chance to speak to Liverpool about the vacant manager's position at Anfield last weekend - is a big fan of Phillips, according to sources in South Wales.

Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes and Burnley's Jay Rodriguez are also on McDermott's radar.

But the Reading manager refused to discuss his targets: "We do things the right way here and we don't talk about specific players, especially those at other clubs.

"We are always on the lookout for players who can strengthen our squad so we will see what happens from here on."

Meanwhile, Reading could be lining up a bid for Greek wonder keeper Stefanos Kapino.

The 18-year-old has been tipped to become one of the best keepers in Europe after a superb debut season for cash-strapped Panathinaikos.

Reading goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo is believed to have flown to Greece last weekend to watch the youngster first hand.

Arsenal and Fulham have also been tracking Kapino, who stands 6ft 5ins tall.

If Reading do make a bid, it could mean one of their own keepers maybe offloaded to make way with Alex McCarthy and Mikkel Andersen both playing back-up to No.1 Adam Federici.

England Under 21 international McCarthy enjoyed successful spells with Leeds United and Ipswich Town on loan last season and the 22-year-old is looking for regular first-team football.

Reading will also try and bring Queens Park Rangers defender Matthew Connolly to the Madejski Stadium on a permanent deal. The versatile 24-year-old played six games on loan last season and Rangers could be willing to let him go.
