Left-back pens long-term deal

JOSEPH Mills has signed a new contract with Reading FC.

Mills, younger brother of ex-Reading skipper Matt, was facing an uncertain future as he only a signed a 12 month deal when he joined from Championship rivals Southampton last summer.

But earlier today the 22-year-old left-back put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at Madejski Stadium until summer 2014.

"I'm delighted to have signed the contract," he said. "When I joined I knew I had to make an impression because I only signed until the end of the season.

"Luckily, I got a good run of games to show people what I'm capable. I think I've worked hard and improved and I think the manager saw that and rewarded me with a new deal."

Mills is one of three players at the club vying for the left-back position along with Ian Harte and Andy Griffin.

Royals also failed with an audacious bid to sign Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge before the transfer deadline closed last week.

Meanwhile, Mills has recovered from an ankle injury and could be recalled to the starting line-up for Reading's home fixture against Coventry City at Madejski Stadium this Saturday (3pm ko).

Fit-again winger Jimmy Kebe, who also signed a new deal recently, is back in full training and likely to return.
