Charlton dump Royals out of Carling Cup

BRIAN McDermott suffered a third successive defeat for the first time as Reading manager as his side crashed out of the Carling Cup.
They were beaten 2-1 by League One Charlton Athletic at The Valley in a rearranged first-round tie tonight.
It followed on from Championship defeats to Barnsley and Portsmouth within the last week.
Paul Benson put Chris Powell's hosts in front with a close-range strike in the 25th minute.
Jason Euell doubted the Addicks' lead with a 63rd minute header past Alex McCarthy.
Sean Morrison gave Royals a lifeline when he bundled home on his debut in the 72nd minute.
But efforts from new signing Joseph Mills and substitute Hal Robson-Kanu proved to be too little too late as Charlton held on.
