FORMER Reading defender Ibrahima Sonko is back training with the club with a view to signing for next season.
The 30-year-old centre-back is set to play in tomorrow's friendly at Northampton Town (3pm ko).
And Royals are also close to signing a second centre-back as they attempt to bolster their defence following the recent departure of Matt Mills and Zurab Khizanishvili.
Boss Brian McDemrott said: "We've got two centre backs in Alex Pearce and Sean Morrison, they are both talented and young, and I've said publically that it's an area we want to add more depth to.
"I've spoken to Ibrahima and he's very keen to train with us, so we will see where it leads us, and we are also working hard to conclude another deal that has been our focus for some time.
"We'll be taking a full squad to Northampton, and Ibrahima will play some part in the game."
Senegal ace Sonko was signed by ex-manager Steve Coppell from Brentford on a free transfer in 2004. He made 136 appearances in a four-year spell at the Madejski Stadium, earning the nickname 'Superman.'
He moved to Stoke City for £2.25 million in 2008 but has made just 14 league appearances for the Potters in the last three years and was farmed out on loan to Hull City then Portsmouth.
He was released by Stoke at the end of last season and is currently a free agent.
Royals fans can pay on the day at Sixfields. Tickets cost £10 adults, £8 concessions and £3 Under 18s.
